The Municipal Top 10: Top 10 most livable small-to-midsize cities
One-third of Americans prefer to live in smaller cities, where the commutes are shorter and there is a little more breathing room than in big cities.
Such benefits reportedly outweigh considerations like fewer dining options and shorter business hours.
Earlier this year, the website WalletHub.com scored hundreds of small and mid-size urban communities across the country. “The Best Small Cities in America,” according to the survey it conducted, are popular for their economic health, education, health, quality of life, and safety.
In addition, a primary conclusion reached by the survey was that one of the best perks of living in a city with a relatively small population is affordability.
It cited the Economic Policy Institute, which noted, “the cost of living for a two-parent, two-child family in Hanford, California, for instance, would be $6,517 per month, compared with more than double at $13,252 for the same family in San Francisco.”
Twenty cities scored in the 99th percentile of WalletHub’s survey algorithm. Of those, the 10 most livable small-to-midsize cities were:
- Carmel, Indiana
- Lexington, Massachusets
- Brentwood, Tennessee
- Westfield, Indiana
- Fishers, Indiana
- Fair Lawn, New Jersey
- Milton, Massachusets
- Melrose, Massachusets
- Saratoga Springs, New York
- Brookfield, Wisconsin
