Bioaugmentation 101: What You Need to Know
Microbial populations in wastewater treatment plants occasionally require help to handle challenging conditions such as foaming, odour, FOG, insufficient ammonia oxidation, erratic BOD/COD reduction and more.
In many cases, bioaugmentation, or microbial additives, can enhance the performance of the microbial community and naturally aid in stabilizing biological performance in collection and treatment systems. A number of specialized formulations are available in our MICROCAT® product line that target specific applications and issues in a treatment facility.
Many operators are unfamiliar with the benefits and ease of use of bioaugmentaiton products. One of the most common questions is, “If I add microbial product, will it take over the biomass?” The answer is “No.” Microbial additives are specialized formulations of naturally occurring microbes that are intended to strengthen the culture that is already present in the treatment system, not overwhelm and control it. There is no risk of creating a mono-culture in your biomass by using bioaugmentation.
Which bioaugmentation products… and when?
Hannah Equipment can work closely with you to analyze your treatment system and recommend the appropriate bioagumentation product. Our goal is to find the right bioaugmentation solution to restore and maintain optimum levels of biological performance at your plant or your collection system.

In the next few issues of our e-newsletter, we’ll tell you more about the many ways that easy-to-use MICROCAT microbial products can help solve problems at your plant, reduce operating costs and maintain regulatory compliance. Our articles will cover a number of common questions and myths about bioaugmentation such as:
Do microbial products pose a health risk?
What’s the difference among microbial products?
Why do I have to add microbial products? Shouldn’t the microbes already be there?
