Following the (federal) money
According to a 2011 ranking, the state of Mississippi was No. 1 among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the amount of federal funding it received for different projects. Its $31 billion haul represented a 22 percent increase in federal funding dollars between 2007 and 2009.
During the same period, the amount funneling to the childhood home of President Barack Obama (No. 5) went up a whopping 106 percent. No. 6 Alaska, on the other hand, ratcheted up only a 17 percent increase.
State No. 51, in case you’re wondering, was Minnesota —which received a paltry 40 cents on the dollar in return for its “investment” in the federal well-being. And that represented an increase!
